Glynis Davies | Glynis is married with two grown up boys and a dog called Bronwen. In a previous life, she was a secondary Music teacher with a specialist interest in Ethnomusicology and currently plays the Horn in a local Brass Band. She has been playing Croquet for seven years and belongs to Northampton CC and Wrest Park CC. She enjoys the competitive element of the sport as much as the camaraderie of the players, as well as the world travel opportunities it offers. She is presently a member of the IPDG Development Squad and has played competitively in Portugal, South Africa, Corfu and Latvia. Her proudest achievement was being awarded the Colman Trophy for the most improved Women’s GC player in 2021. However, her most notable achievements in 2023 were: Winning the Women’s GC Open Championship at Crake Valley, winning the Plate at the Surbiton Women’s Open GC Championship and being a semi finalist in the GC ‘A’ Level Final.
Liz Drury | I've only been playing for two years and played in my first tournament in June. Earlier this year I was pleased to win the Plate at the English GC Women's Open. I am really happy to have made it through the Qualifier, at my home club, Compton! I'm excited to be playing in the World Championship and looking forward to meeting everyone.
Liz Farrow | A friend introduced Liz to croquet not long after she retired from teaching in 2009 and she immediately fell in love with it, having not taken part in any sport since her schooldays. She enjoys both GC and AC and the summer months will find her on a croquet lawn somewhere in the south of England many days of the week. Her (very supportive) husband is a croquet widower while the competitive season is on! She also enjoy photography and is a keen botanist.
Rachel Gee | Rachel started playing competitive croquet when she was 15 and lives and works in Nottingham, England. She lives 3 miles from her local croquet club and works as a Development Team Manager for the data company, Experian. Her husband, both parents and her in-laws are also all croquet players! She has represented England in the Openshaw Shield (2016), won the English National Singles GC Championship twice (2019, 2020), the European GC Championships twice (2014, 2018) and the Women's GC World Championship (2011). Rachel is also a minus handicap at AC and is involved in English croquet administration; serving on several CA committees and is actively involved in GC Coaching at a club and national level. She loves travelling and has found croquet has provided lots of excuses for this over the years, having also played in the USA, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Egypt, Spain and Ireland.
Gabrielle Higgins | Gabrielle discovered croquet the old-fashioned way, on a vicarage lawn, and continued the ecclesiastical theme with her first club experience in the grounds of the Bishop’s Palace of the Bishop of Bath and Wells. After more than two decades playing competitive AC, she has recently started to play GC, and won the first singles tournament she entered, the Women’s GC Championship. She represents Sussex at the GC Intercounties and is looking forward to playing in her seventh croquet World Championship and first GC World Championship at her home club in Southwick. Away from croquet, she is Diocesan Secretary for the Diocese of Chichester, ensuring that her ecclesiastical connection still thrives.
Sue Lightbody | Sue took to playing croquet when a tennis injury demanded she find a new sport. She played professional tennis in the seventies with career highlights of playing at Wimbledon in both the junior and main events. She also played on the first Virginia Slims circuit in America This is her third Women's World GC Championship, having played in New Zealand and Cairo and she's really looking forward to playing at Southwick this year. Her clubs are Dulwich and Budleigh Salterton.
Debbie Lines | Debbie has been playing croquet since the 1980's, but has 'rested' sometimes over the years. She doesn't recommend taking time away from the sport, as she found not playing for some years had a detrimental impact on her playing standard! She currently works part-time in a local community role and is Secretary of Peterborough Croquet Club, but she is mainly kept busy due to her role as WCF Secretary-General. In 1995 she got to the semi-finals of the AC British Opens and beat David Maugham to win the AC North of England Championships. These achievements were enough for her to be selected to represent Great Britain in the GB team that won the 1996 MacRobertson Shield. Her best result since then was just this January, when she won the 2023 WCF AC Women's World Championship. Mainly an AC player, Debbie started playing GC more seriously last year. Her best GC win to date is against Ben Rothman in the GC World Qualifier last year, and her best tournament result so far is getting to the final of the Nottingham GC Championship last July, where she lost to Rachel Gee - a result she hopes they will reverse in the final of this event!
Lynn Pearcey | Lynn first encountered croquet in a back garden when she was young and always planned to return to it. She did this in 2016 when she stopped working full time, starting with GC and later including AC. She won the inaugural East Dorset Women's GC Open in 2022 and has played in various other tournaments around England.
Louise Smith | After a taster session in 2016, Louise and her husband, Stuart, became captivated by croquet! They both now enjoy touring the UK to compete in GC Open and Championship tournaments. Following relocation to Devon in 2019, Louise is a member of both Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton Croquet Clubs. She is an active member of the CA Golf Croquet Tournament Committee and is a tournament Director and Manager. Louise managed the 2022 and 2023 European Championships. Louise has forged a successful doubles partnership with her playing partner, Ryan Cabble. They reached the Semi-Finals at the 2021 British Open Doubles Championship and went on to win the English National Doubles Championship later that same year. Gaining selection to compete at the Women’s World Championship 2023 is Louise’s first opportunity to represent England.
Jayne Stevens | After attending a trial day at Northampton Croquet Club in 2004 whilst looking for something to do, life intervened and sadly Jayne didn’t go back to join until 2013. Such wasted time! Jayne has been playing competitive Golf Croquet for nine years and is delighted to be competing at her second Women’s World Championships. Four years ago she had the pleasure of travelling to New Zealand to compete and is thrilled to get another chance to take part, this time much closer to home. Still very much involved with the family farming business and with various other commitments there isn’t always the time to spend on Croquet as she would like. After a diagnosis of a spinal problem she is determined to thoroughly enjoy this season and the build up to the Women’s Worlds. A solid season last year gained her a ranking place and she is looking forward very much to competing at Southwick; catching up with old friends and making new ones too.
Diana Wilson | Diana is 64 years old and has spent most of her life in Putney, London, with her husband and two grown up children. She's a Physiotherapist of 43 years and has run her clinic, Physio on the River, for 30 of those years. She joined the Roehampton Club in April 2021, after having had her ankles fused (aged 44) because of severe arthritis and forced to give up tennis. So, she decided to try Croquet and took to the sport immediately. She'd forgotten how much she loved to compete. She started with GC but quickly added AC in October 2021. Her club is incredibly friendly and encouraging to new players. She started competing a year ago and her successes have been: Runner-up in the Regional final of the Annual Charity One-Ball Championships, Winner of her first B level GC Series at Hamptworth, which took her to the B level Series final at Hunstanton where she lost in the quarter-finals She was nominated for Rapid Improver of the Year for 2022 and was part of the teams that won both the Murphy Shield (GC) and the Longman Cup (AC) in 2022, contributing to Roehampton Club winning 4 out of the 5 major trophies in one year, which has never been done before. She played for her club team in the first European GC Club League and won against clubs from Latvia, Spain and Portugal putting them through to the final, to be played in October 2023. |
