Virginia Arney | I am a retired teacher, a mother to 4 and grandmother to 7. I have played both GC and AC for the Norwood CC for nearly 2 decades and represented my state, South Australia in both. In 2021 I received a 'South Australia Croquet Legend Award' in recognition of 10 years in the State GC team. My best individual achievement was a Silver Medal in the 2019 Australian Women's GC Championships, runner-up to Alison Sharpe. I have had the opportunity for travel and friendships playing internationally a number of times; in North America (Vancouver and Portland 2009 while living in BC for the year), England, including the GC British Open Championships in 2015 at the Sussex County Croquet Club, Southwick, playing in a 'moon boot'! This will be my 2nd WWGC Championships, having played in NZ in 2019. I also played there in the GC World Championships in 2015. Looking forward to renewing friendships (some from as recently as during the AC Women's Worlds in NZ earlier this year and the two previous ones) and making more!
Pamela Barnwell | I am a retired project manager in my 60’s and started playing croquet upon retirement. I live in Newcastle New South Wales, Australia, and play GC at Newcastle CC and Nelson Bay CC. I introduced my husband to the game on a holiday to England and Scotland in 2019. I started competing when the Australian Championships came to the Newcastle area in 2018, and have continued to play competitively since. I won the Division 1 Doubles in 2020 when I partnered with my husband, the plate at the ACA open singles in 2021, the NSW selectors in 2019 and was part of the New South Wales Team in 2019 and 2021, unfortunately COVID interrupted competition in 2021. I entered my first Australian women’s open singles championship in 2019, and got through to the knock out. Third place in the 2022 NSW Open Women’s singles. I am excited to be playing in my first international event. I was drawn to the game because my father played AC in the 80’s and 90’s, he was an inspiration. I have 2 young granddaughters, the eldest at 5yo has her own custom mallet, you’re never too young I say.
Gerda Lambeck | Gerda has been playing and thoroughly enjoying croquet since retiring as a paediatric physiotherapist 10 years ago, playing mostly Golf Croquet. She is a member of the Canberra Croquet Club in the ACT, Australia, a trained coach, and has participated in Pennants competition, enjoying competing in “away” events. She was selected for the 2019 Interstate Shield team which was played in Victoria, and was runner up in the NSW Women’s GC Championship and winner of the NSW Doubles Championship (with David Hanbidge) in 2022. She was a member of the winning State team for the Interstate Shield in 2022, and is looking forward to competing in her first Women’s World Championships.
Jamie Gumbrell | Jamie was introduced to Croquet by her Grandparents at age 15. They took Jamie to the Canberra Croquet Club where she has been a member since. Peter Freer mentored and taught her how to play. Jamie has competed in U21 tournaments in NZ and Australia. Jamie won the Australian U21 Championship in 2020. Sadly Covid prevented Jamie defending the title. She has also competed in NSW events, Australian, NZ and English events. Other than competing in two U21 World Championships she has also taken part in two World Open Championships. Jamie was the winner of the New South Wales and Australian Women’s GC Singles title in 2022, and part of the NSW team for the third time. Jamie has won many titles in Canberra, is the club’s webmaster and is an accredited coach.
Kate McLoughlin | A member of the Canberra Croquet Club since her retirement over 10 years ago, Kate has been a member of the NSW State GC team since 2019. She was runner up in NSW Women’s GC singles in 2019 and 2020, and also in the Plate in the Women’s GC World Championships in New Zealand in 2019. Kate was third in the Australian Women’s GC Championships in 2023, and a member of the winning 2023 NSW State team. Kate is also Captain of Canberra Croquet Club, and Chair of Croquet NSW. She enjoys competing, coaching and getting involved in croquet planning and organisation. She is looking forward to playing and competing in England and participating in her second World GC Championships. |
